We have never had greater need for information management as we do now. While the principle is not new, two major changes have emerged to remind companies that digital transformation is indeed moving fast: moving information systems to the cloud on one side and the protection of personal data on the other side.
Small reminder : what is information management, concretely ?
A company possesses data on its customers, those are stored in systems (databases, applications, cloud) that allow access to company employees in their daily tasks. Most often, years of data collection have given birth to an infrastructure that has become obsolete, or at least difficult to access (the famous silos), which consequently slows down the optimal use of the information.
From this raw data is drawn a set of informations useful to the company. Information thus results from aggregation of data. To implement information management, the company must first define its priorities, establish processing (and protection) rules and allow its proper use thereof (data quality remains a sensitive point). This happening throughout the full data lifecycle, as shown in the illustration below which schematically illustrates the steps on which Rever intervenes in an information management strategy.
As you will have noticed, at the center of this diagram is the word « metadata ». This is not trivial, because they are inseparable from the background work to be carried out. Better yet, they are necessary to take control of the company's project. In a previous article, we already discussed the importance of metadata in information management (Metadata for Dummies). From our technical point of view, it has been obvious for a long time.
After years of trying to convince on this subject, it seems that the market (ie company leaders) has finally come to the conclusion that our vision is the right one: a strategy that starts from the metadata level takes time and requires a solid technical knowledge, but the result is all profit in the end: information retrieval is faster, you eliminate redundancies, you permit the discovery of hidden links between data... all this will make it possible to really value « big data ».
It's therefore understood that data governance (ie information governance) is not easy. Participants with opposing ideas, too many problems inherited from the past, little or no ambition to follow technological changes, the choice to reduce costs and delays from the start and during the project, while this only postpones the problem to a later date... with all the expected consequences.
The problem of GDPR also disrupts working habits as individuals will be able to control which data are collected about them and how they are used by the company, data which must be protected in a clear and uniform manner by the company.
Focusing on infrastructure is no longer enough, data is at the heart of everything and to face the future, organizations will have to redouble their efforts and adopt smart information management methods.
